CLUBHOUSE: Setting a New Record of Digital Marketing Engagement

Digital media today is all about creation.  “Creators, creators, creators, creators,” is the unofficial motto of Clubhouse, a new type of social network centered around audio chat. Clubhouse focuses on what creators have to say to the world, and it’s been seeing engagement levels that have never been seen before. It’s only been around for about a year, but the invite-only app is already impacting the major social networks: Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.

The market has seen a huge growth in platforms requiring payment for a certain media service. While social media “influencers” are created from the typical free social media platforms, they can monetize themselves through other platforms like OnlyFans or Cameo after building up a following on free platforms. The main reason for these paid platforms is to be able to make money off social media outside of sponsorships and ads. Even Instagram, notorious as a platform that is free for everyone to use, is testing out “Subscriptions”, where users can pay to receive exclusive content from celebrities and influencers to which free users will not have access.

Most platforms lose 75% of their followers after the first month, but not Clubhouse. Focusing on creators has brought them to a new level of audience engagement. Whether that is due to the power of audio or its premise of supporting creators, Clubhouse is helping these creators build a business and fast—no more switching from social network platform to social network platform to make money. As a bonus, Clubhouse’s “Creator First” Accelerator program provides selected creators with equipment, talent, creative help, and promotion, plus a monthly stipend.

So, why is Clubhouse so popular? It’s definitely not the only audio-based platform out there. Other pioneers like YouTube and podcasts continue to blaze new trails, not to mention other startups similar to Clubhouse that have sprung up during lockdown. Maybe it was because of the lockdown that Clubhouse took off. People miss being able to collaborate after work and bounce ideas off each other, and they miss being able to listen to others and be inspired by them. Creators on Clubhouse, while it can be beneficial to have fancy equipment and 24/7 promotion, only need their phone to really get started. At its simplest, Clubhouse is about making voices heard—literally—and allowing creators to do what they do best: create.

Information Technology & Its Role in the Modern Organization

Information technology is more than just fixing computers in an office. Now more than ever, it has become the backbone of contemporary businesses and companies, and the catapulting force that can help put your organization on top. Information technology involves more devices than just computers – printers, copiers, the Cloud, online security, and even artificial intelligence are also included in the category. These forms of technology can work to not only improve your organization but advance your business past your competitors.

How Information Tech Can Better Your Business

Different forms of information technology can play a large role in helping to achieve the goals you have set for your business. Whether you want to increase your sales, revenue, profitability, growth, brand awareness, or positioning, information technology can contribute to boosting all these outcomes by helping your employees be more productive and cutting costs related to outdated technologies. It serves to streamline processes and makes it easier for organizations to focus on their work instead of spending time doing things by hand that technology could do in mere seconds. For example, if there is an issue with a copier that is not allowing you to copy documents, it can be fixed remotely and almost immediately by an information technology professional, which not only removes the time that it takes for him to get to the office, but also removes the distraction of having someone physically working on the machine, which can increase employee productivity.

Information technology also helps to keep your organization running smoothly. It can automate data collection, so instead of devoting someone to gathering data or pulling numbers, IT can create an algorithm that gathers the data automatically, which frees that employee to spend his time doing something else for the company. In addition to automated data collection, information technology can manage and sort that data, and any other kind of information that you ask of it. It can even help to develop a business-customer relationship, like a computerized customer service chat, that helps customers communicate with the business and help it to improve through feedback. Along this same vein, IT can connect organizations with their various suppliers as well, easing communication between the different parties. Overall, having a unified and optimized office technology ecosystem makes it easier for the company, suppliers, and customers to communicate and interact. This leads to increased efficiency in operations and innovation, a stronger bottom line, and boosted customer satisfaction, which, in turn, increases the overall success of your business.

Protect Yourself with Information Tech

Another role information technology can play is that of online security. There are many antivirus technologies that can protect the online facets of your business, such as Norton Antivirus and McAfee Antivirus, which work to keep your computer and other devices safe from viruses and other cyber dangers. These antivirus programs can be downloaded directly onto your computer from the Internet or installed by a professional with the sole purpose of defending your information from outside malware. The advancement of technology comes with the opening of more avenues for people to steal privileged information. Therefore, technology must adapt to prevent these avenues from being exploited. The best way to keep your information and the information of your company safe from malware is to employ information technology in the form of an antivirus, something that not enough organizations utilize.

Reduce Human Error

Finally, accounting and keeping track of budgets can be made much easier with information technology. By automating some of the processes involved in accounting and grouping the information online, budgets and employee salaries are easier to keep track of, since they are all in one area and less impacted by human error. Technology also makes it quicker to adjust budgets due to cuts or fund reallocation, since spreadsheets can now automatically make calculations for formulas and numbers that you input, saving you from having to calculate adjustments by hand.

Stay Current with the Times

Information technology is a fluid thing. It never stays stagnant in one spot, and always changes to adapt to the world around it as new innovations are introduced. This constant movement means that technology is never the same as it was when it originated, like the improvement of the cell phone or computer. Take the printer, for example--it has grown into a tool that does so much more than print documents. Modern printers can now print, scan, send documents, and make copies, condensing what should be several different pieces of technology into one machine. This means that instead of having to use several different machines to share both digital information and hardcopies, you only need to use the one printer, cutting down on not only expenses, but time that would have been spent moving from machine to machine, boosting your efficiency.

Organizations must shift to keep up with all of the new changes in the business world, and information technology is crucial in helping them keep pace with everyone around them. In order to really be considered a “modern” organization, a business needs to employ and embrace innovation and growth within their information technology. If not, you and your business will be left behind by your competitors. Technology plays a necessary role in keeping an organization relevant to the times. By utilizing updated information technology, your business does not have to waste valuable time performing tasks by hand that can be done by a machine or online. Instead, you can devote your energy to being more available to customers, or finding a more efficient way to connect with suppliers, putting you ahead of your competitors who are still struggling with adapting to the times.

Information Tech Will Unlock Your Full Potential

Information technology is a crucial part of any organization, but it is also a part that tends to be overlooked, or deemed as less significant than other factors in an organization’s success. Because of this, many “modern” organizations really are not that modern at all, using old equipment and ideas to run their businesses, and putting themselves unknowingly at a disadvantage. Simply by updating machines, like printers, and modes of communication between customers, the business, and suppliers, organizations could greatly improve their productivity and budgeting. Information technology can do so much more for an organization than merely making sure that computers are operating properly, so to have a successful, truly modern organization, employ information technology to its fullest potential.

Rough Fall? Spring Back!

A new year has come, and it is time to snap out of winter break mode to take on the challenges of the spring semester. For some of you, fall semester may not have been all that you hoped for, whether you had a hard time adjusting to college life, got a lower grade in a class than you wanted, or had too much on your plate to take time to do things that you enjoy. Now that it’s spring, time to figure out exactly which resources UM offers that can help you succeed this semester.

ACADEMIC STRUGGLES? The Learning Commons in Richter Library is here to save the day! The Camner Academic Resource Center offers two free hours of tutoring per week through the Learning Commons—just make an appointment online to get help. The Math Lab offers free tutoring as well, for anything from Finite Mathematics to Differential Equations and everything in between. Math tutoring is provided by math majors who received an A or above in the class, and they accept walk-in appointments. The Research Center is happy to help out if you’re struggling finding sources for a research paper. If you’re a graduating senior writing a thesis or a grad student carefully crafting a dissertation, the Research Center can also help you with formatting and organizing your thoughts into a successful final project. Finally, the Writing Center will look over your essay, whether you’re in a 500-level English Literature class or Gen. Ed. English Composition. With all of these free and convenient resources, you’ll be able to bounce back from your tough fall to reach your full academic potential in the spring!

OVERWHELMED? Whether you’re stressed, worried about your mental health, or just need to talk to someone, the Counseling Center is here to listen. Appointments are available online, and if you want to contact them after hours, call the 24-hour hot line at (305) 284-5511. Our counselors are professionally trained and are always available to talk to students, no matter how odd the hours. If you don’t want to speak with a professional and you live on campus, feel free to reach out to your floor’s Resident Assistant. Your RA is there to help you with whatever you need to flourish in college, including being there to support you academically and emotionally.

FEELING LEFT OUT? There are over 250 clubs and organizations at UM that anyone can join! College can be hard to adjust to, so a good way to feel like you belong is to connect with people with similar interests to you and get involved. OrgSync is a website that lists all of the active clubs and organizations here at UM, so you can find something that fits you. Just use your CaneID and password to sign in, and browse all of the opportunities that college has to offer. If you can’t find an organization that entices you, it’s easy to create one! Swing by the Dean of Student’s office and pick up a form to start your club. All you need are twenty-five signatures from other students who are interested in being a part of your new organization and a faculty advisor, and you’re good to start your club!

Even if your fall semester wasn’t everything you had hoped for, spring, the time of new beginnings and rebirth, is the perfect time to get back on track. UM has a plethora of resources (usually free!) that you can utilize, so spring back this spring and be the most successful you that you can be!

I composed this minimalist header graphic to introduce my editorial column in the Pearson Post, "Hey, Y'all!" The purpose of the column was to share my experience as a college student and a member of the Housing and Residential Life department, and also to inform students and residents of opportunities and resources available to them through the university.
